What does «letanía» mean in Spanish?
- A prayer consisting of a long series of brief invocations to God, the Virgin or the saints in the case of Christian worship. Also present in some forms of Jewish worship, but of much less use. For example, the Abinu Malkenu, which is recited during the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur liturgies. In the Eastern Orthodox Church and those following the Byzantine rite, the litany is called ektenia. There are numerous ektenias during Byzantine religious services such as the Divine Liturgy, Vespers, Matins, Sacred Mysteries (Sacraments), among other services.
