- Inflammation of the gums. This is a non-destructive disease that causes inflammation of the gums. The most common form of gingivitis, and the most common form of periodontal disease in general, is in response to bacterial plaque adhering to tooth surfaces, called plaque-induced gingivitis. Most forms of gingivitis are plaque-induced. There are also gingivitis induced by viruses, bacteria, fungi, traumatic injury, etc.
