What does «fidalgo» mean in Spanish?
- Traditional Portuguese noble title referring to a titled or untitled member of the nobility. A fidalgo is comparable in some ways to the French gentilhomme (the word also implies nobility by birth or by charge) and to Italian nobility. The title was abolished after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1910.
- Hidalgo; a person who by blood is of a noble and distinguished class. In Castile, hidalgo was a lesser degree of nobility. It does not mean the same as the Portuguese fidalgo.
