What does «escala cromática» mean in Spanish?
- Also called twelve-tone scale, dodecaphonic scale (dodecaphonic or duodecuple) is a musical scale with twelve tones, each one a semitone above or below the adjacent tones. As a result, in a 12-tone equal temperament (the most common temperament in Western music), the chromatic scale covers all 12 available tones. Therefore, there is only one chromatic scale. Also, in equal temperament, all semitones are the same size (100 cents) and there are twelve semitones in an octave (1200 cents). As a result, the notes of an equal temperament chromatic scale are equally spaced. "The chromatic.... scale is a series of half steps comprising all the pitches of our [12-tone] equal-tempered system," Allen Forte (1979).
