- To infuse, usually with verbascum seeds, the waters of a river or stream to stupefy the fish so that they can be easily caught. The mullein plant (Verbascum pulverulentum) was formerly used to make the waters greener so that stupefied fish could be caught. Due to the powerful alkaloids (with relaxing action) of this plant, its leaves used to be crushed and thrown into the water.
