- African ebenaceous tree whose hard, black wood is used for furniture making. Popular ebony species include: Diospyros ebenum (Ceylon ebony), native to southern India and Sri Lanka; Diospyros dendro (D. crassiflora, Gabon ebony), native to West Africa; and Disperse celeriac (Makassar ebony).
- Wood of this tree. It is a dense and very black wood. It is one of the few woods that sink in water because of its density. They allow to be polished achieving a great smoothness.
