♦ Used in: Cuba - Puerto Rico - Punishment carried out by the Civil Guard commanded by the conservative governor Romualdo Palacio, who persecuted, tortured and imprisoned sympathizers of the Autonomist Party founded in 1887 in Puerto Rico. Due to widespread complaints about the practice of the componte, General Palacio was dismissed and returned to Spain less than eight months after assuming the governorship.
