- A species of caterpillar belonging to the family Psychidae, common in southern North America and throughout South America. Also known as the sack caterpillar. The psychid family consists of about 1350 described species. Their larvae weave a sac of silk and bits of leaf, with which they protect all of their body except the head. After about three weeks, the male emerges, which looks like a black moth.
