- Ancient form of "slander" and, also, monetary penalty as compensation for this offense.
- Pecuniary penalty. In the past, the caluña was the compensation that the offender had to pay to the victim or his family as compensation for the damage caused. With the development of public criminal law, the caluña became a monetary sanction (or fine) for certain crimes.
