What does «autorretrato» mean in Spanish?
- Portrait that an artist, a writer, makes of himself. In baroque and renaissance times it was customary for the painter to portray himself in a large painting. But it does not only exist in painting, it is also a literary resource close to prosopography and ethopoeia. The first recorded self-portraits date back to 1300 B.C. in ancient Egypt, where a sculptor named Bek sculpted himself in stone, a right only accessible to the gods, the rich and the powerful.
Examples of use in Spanish: "en el museo exponen un autorretrato de Van Gogh".
