What does «australopithecus» mean in Spanish?
- The discovery of the australopithecine group marks an important stage in the history of human paleontology. In 1925, Raymond Dart announced the discovery of a natural endocranial cast with a part of the face of an infant anthropomorph with characteristic human features, which he named Australopithecus africanus, in the breccias of the Taungs Cave (Transvaal). The discovery was much discussed until 1936 when Broom, in the Sterkfontein cave (Pretoria), found new samples of a similar type, but adult.
