What does «astasia-abasia» mean in Spanish?
- A disorder first described by the French neuropsychiatrists Charcot and Richer, consisting of a kind of motor disability of the lower limbs, characterized by the inability to stand (astasia) and walk (abasia) although persons suffering from this disorder can use their legs normally when sitting or lying down. This disorder is explained by motor or sensory problems or coordination problems of the lower limbs. It is considered to be a form of hysteria. There would exist in the disease a component of fear, not as intense as in the psychogenic fainting, but more prolonged.
