He also enacted a new law decreeing that only the children of Athenian parents could be Athenian citizens, a measure that elevated the importance of Athenian women, but also further entrenched the Athenian conceit in relation to other Greek cities; Athenians wanted citizenship to be their own carefully protected commodity.
