What does «dom» mean in Spanish?
- Treatment or honorific title given to certain religious (Benedictines, Carthusians, Salesians). It is used before the surname or first name.
- A group of ethnic groups spread throughout India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Also known as Domba.
- (D.O.M.) Acronym of Deo optimo maximo ("For the greatest and best god"), a Latin phrase originally pagan to refer to the god Jupiter. When the Roman Empire adopted Christianity the phrase took on the meaning "To God the Greatest and Best". Its use continued long after the fall of the Roman Empire as Latin remained the ecclesiastical and academic language in the West. Thus, the phrase, or its abbreviation, can be found on many Renaissance-era churches and other buildings, especially sarcophagi, especially in Italy and Malta.
