What does «clavel alemán» mean in Spanish?
- This cattle breed was introduced more than 150 years ago by German emigrants from the Holstein and Friesian regions to Chile, and is also found in Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay. It is hardy, so it can easily adapt to various climates. It is also called overo colorado and in Germany Rotbunte. It is used especially for meat and milk production. The selection to which it has been subjected generated three variants: dual purpose, butcher and dairy. The male has an adult weight of between 900 and 1000 kg, while the female weighs 450 to 600 kg. A female can produce an average of 4,500 liters of milk per lactation.
