What does «cisterciense» mean in Spanish?
- Relating to the Cistercians: the Cistercian order.
- Member of the monastic Order founded in 1098 by the Benedictine abbot, Robert of Champagne. The first monastery was established in the forest of Citeaux (Cistercium), near Dijon, and was governed according to the strict interpretation of the rule of St. Benedict (v. Benedict, St.; Benedictines). With the incorporation into the Order of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1112) it spread rapidly through the western countries so that by the middle of the 13th century there were already 2000 abbeys (v. Bernard of Clairvaux, St.). His first monastery in England was Waverley Abbey in Surrey (1128).
