What does «aleta pectoral» mean in Spanish?
- Paired fins of fish located on the sides of the fish (just behind the operculum). Also called scapular or thoracic fin. They are used for slow locomotion, turning and braking; they are also used by certain fishes to maintain depth, fly in flying fishes or walk like the Lophiiformes and those of the subfamily Oxudercinae. The pectoral fins are homologous to the forelimbs of tetrapods. In fact, in some fishes, the rays of the pectoral fins extend similar to fingers as in Scorpaeniformes and Dactylopteridae.
