Monks and nuns took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience when they left their normal lives and joined (respectively) monasteries and convents.
They were made up of 'knightly monks' who took monastic vows (i.e. of obedience, poverty and chastity) but who spent their time fighting as well as praying.
