Spartan women scandalised other Greeks by participating in athletics and seem to have benefited from a greater degree of personal freedom than women elsewhere in Greece - of course, this would have been a social necessity as the men of Sparta lived in barracks until the age of 30, leaving women in charge of domestic property.
