The Sedition Act imposed harsh penalties - up to five years in prison and a hefty $5,000 fine in 1790 - on those convicted of speaking or writing "scandalously or maliciously" against the US government. Twenty-five men, all Democratic-Republicans, were charged under the law, and ten were convicted.
