Insects breathe through a series of tiny tubes called tracheae, which disperse air taken directly from the outside into the cells through intricate mazes, interspersed with tiny air sacs. One pair of these sacs, surrounded by membranes, serves the function of primitive eardrums, capturing external vibrations and communicating them to the end points of the sensory cells, thus serving as the organ of hearing.
