With few exceptions, the idiom cannot be translated into other languages, nor can its words be replaced by other words, even if they are synonyms: no one would think of replacing the phrase "se juntaron el hambre y las ganas de comer" by "se unieron el apetito y las ganas de ingerir", words which have almost the same meaning, but which do not acquire the value of an idiom because they are not the ones that have been used together to express the original idea.
