Although countless inventors had paved the way for that discovery, their devices (given strange names such as vitascope, fregoligraph, panopticon, phototachygraph and andersonoscopograph) were mostly toys that soon tired the public. Edison's machine, the kinetoscope, was not perfect either, as the pleasure of seeing the characters move was marred by the annoying jumps in the image.
