The Weimar republic's constitution stipulated that the vote was proportional, and the popular vote translated into a corresponding number of seats for the various political parties. Unfortunately, given the wide range of political allegiances present in German society, there were thirty-two different parties, representing not only elements of the left and right political spectrum, but also regional and religious identities.
