While the bourgeoisie were proud of their, by their own admission, sobriety and work ethic, in contrast to the frivolity of the nobility, successful members of the middle class often eagerly bought up as much land as they could, both out of emulation of the nobles and because voting rights in most of Western Europe were for decades tied to land ownership.
