The ritual of the use of rings, like most of the rituals surrounding marriage, has its origins in the distant past. Already the Egyptians and Romans gave the "annulus sponsalitus", first of iron and later of gold, as this being the most durable metal, it was supposed to ensure a permanent marital union.
