The amniotic fluid in which the foetus is immersed has important functions: it ensures its hydration, facilitates its movement, protects it from external trauma, prevents compression of the umbilical cord and reduces the impact of foetal movements on the uterus. This fluid forms the pouch, lubricates the birth canal and contributes to the regular distribution of uterine force on the foetus during contraction.
