The "real" change of course, however, came in the Soviet Union. At the end of 1942, a huge German army was sent against the city of Stalingrad, near the Black Sea. For months, Russian and Ukrainian civilians and soldiers fought the Germans in brutal street battles, and the inhabitants of Stalingrad often faced German tanks armed only with grenades, pistols and Molotov cocktails.
