Such claims go back centuries; perhaps the first clear feminist thinker in Western society was the Renaissance courtesan Christine de Pizan, and later feminists such as Mary Wollstonecraft explicitly linked the feminist claim to equality with the revolutionary promise of the American and French Revolutions of the late 18th century.
