The Narodniks believed that the Russian serfs would form the nucleus of a revolutionary class that would rise up and dismantle the tsarist autocracy if they were properly educated. Instead, the serfs were deeply suspicious of the urbane and educated Narodniks, and in many cases the serfs handed the Narodniks over to the local authorities.

Incredibly, the Soviets were able to use this respite to literally dismantle their factories and transport them to the east, out of range of German bombers. Entire factories, particularly in the Ukraine, were stripped of engines, turbines and any other useful equipment that could be moved, and shipped hundreds of miles away from the front lines.
