- Geog. Disused name for the city Turku, known in Swedish as Åbo. Located on the southwest coast of Finland and former administrative capital of the province of Western Finland (Länsi-Suomen lääni), until 2009. It is located on the banks of the Aura River and was founded in the thirteenth century, making it the oldest city in Finland. It was the most populated until 1840, currently remains an important cultural and business center. It has 187,564 inhabitants (year 2016). The Turku region had 318,168 inhabitants.
